At more than 3,800 meters above sea level, Lake Titicaca holds importance in multiple ways. It is where the Tiwanaku people first settled when they came to Bolivia, as well as sacred to the Incan empire, as it is said to be where the first Inca king was born. It’s importance to the Inca resulted in many ruins surrounding the lake. It is located in the Andes and contains about 41 islands. About 40% of the lake is actually in Bolivia, while the other 60% lies in Peru.
